The origins of Tapa

In our post today we will tell you a little bit about the gastronomic culture in Spain. The name had its origin in an episode in southern Spain, in a tavern in the city of Cadiz, where King Fernando VII asked for a glass of wine with a side. At the moment the waiter was serving him, a kind of air swirl invaded the room, and to keep the wine from spilling he cover the glass’ top with a slice of cheese. “To cover”, in Spanish, means “Tapar”

The King liked the idea and asked to his court for another glass of wine “with Tapa”. There are many stories related to Tapa, and another notorious one is that which King Alfonso X, the Wise, following medical orientations, would always eat something after drinking any alcoholic beverage so he wouldn’t get drunk. Thus, he determined that every bar and tavern in Castilla should not serve alcohol unless followed by any sides.
